The first traces of "Red Lights" reportedly began not inside a studio, but in the aftermath of a single night in Las Vegas that would later become inseparable from the identity of the recording.

According to sources associated with the project, the lyrics were drafted on the back pages of a motel Bible shortly after Jacobs returned from a strip club near the Las Vegas Strip. Rather than allowing the idea to remain unfinished, he reportedly decided to capture the song immediately, preserving the atmosphere and emotions of the moment while they were still present.

The recording itself was created under similarly unconventional circumstances. Jacobs contacted a friend who owned a bar near the Las Vegas Strip and requested access to the venue's office to begin working on the track. Using a TASCAM 8-track recorder, a synthesizer, and an Alesis HR-16 drum machine, he recorded the song inside the active nightlife environment rather than separating himself from it.

In an interview with a Dallas-area independent music journalist, Jacobs recalled that the bar owner suggested recording directly behind the bar while customers and staff continued their night around him. Although Jacobs described the idea as "insane," he embraced the unpredictability of the situation, allowing the surroundings themselves to become part of the recording.

The finished track preserves fragments of that environment, incorporating background conversations, laughter, and crowd noise from the bar into the final production. These sounds remain audible throughout portions of the song, creating the feeling of a moment captured in real time rather than a carefully isolated studio performance. The opening synthesizer riff is accompanied by a female vocalization that Jacobs later claimed had been recorded earlier that evening at the motel.

At its core, "Red Lights" follows a narrator caught between awareness and surrender. The song explores desire as a force that is recognized as dangerous, yet willingly embraced. Temptation is not portrayed as something approaching from outside, but as something invited in, creating a conflict between knowing the consequences and choosing to continue anyway.

Several lyrics use imagery associated with darkness, danger, and loss of control. Lines such as "just can't help myself, devil's got a hold of me" and "eat my heart and make me feel it, show your darkness don't conceal it" present lust as something consuming and almost inhuman, a presence that gradually takes control rather than a simple moment of attraction.

When asked whether the song was inspired by a specific dancer, Jacobs declined to identify the individual directly. In a later interview, he stated, "She knows who she is," while claiming that the female vocalization featured in the recording was performed by the same person.

The result is a recording that feels tied to a specific night and a specific place, preserving the atmosphere of a moment where curiosity, temptation, and uncertainty collided. "Red Lights" does not document the aftermath of the night. It captures the moment before the consequences arrive.
