TERR108: "Out of the Miasma" marks a new beginning for Texian audiovisual specialist Dustin Sheehan aka Cretin Dilettante. The two-track collaged ambient beatscape EP casts a full spectrum picture of where the project was born and where it's headed.
Originally created to accompany his crony's erotic films, with lately picked up theory and production methods Cretin Dilettante laces up for moving forward from a lightless period in his life; Sheehan is examining sonics and technology from a philosophical point of view similar to analyzing formal logic and language. "It's all about deciphering, creating, modifying, and recreating patterns and arrangements of sounds."
The title track "Out of the Miasma" finds Sheehan pointed toward to a foreboding, quasi-speed malaise of scattered drums nodding to something akin to Vatican Shadow, illuminated with a cold hard light of synth washes and speaker-worrying subs which for our money finds him at his best. This flows into the richly detailed, airy flotation of "And into the Light" which operates with gleaming synth motifs carried by a lustre of collaged meditative texture work and carefully executed tape sputter blurred around the peripheral vision.
One of the best flashes from Cretin Dilettante - bar none.
