Albanie: Polyphonies vocales et instrumentales

The choice of music and musicians was based on that of the "Festival Folklorik Kombëtar" of Gjirokastër. This very important event, coordinated by the Tiranë Institute of Popular Culture, takes place every five years and lasts a full week. In 1983, it was the forum for some 1600 singers, dancers and musicians. Tracks nos. 1,3, 7, 11 and 12 were recorded at the Institute. The other pieces were recorded in the original towns and villages except No. 2 which was recorded at Ohrid, in Yugoslavia, in 1988.

The recordings were made during a mission of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, and the Ministère des Relations extérieures, France.
