This release is the emfabled *live* release of Duke Ellingtons. The one that made it big. Embarrassingly most of that 'live' release was actually recorded in studio with faux show-room ambiance created by adding reverb and canned applause.
This *anniversary edition release* aims to correct that, by adding the actual live bits and then the non live bits and alot of in-between announcements, all in wonderful *stereo* thanks to two different mono-recordings by two different recorders. Most of this is explained in the extensive linernotes of this release.
The bottom line is that this *is* a live release. But most of it is not, infact live, so the live tracks are annotated as such, this is a clear break with the styleguidelines, and I know it, but as this release was created by the original recorders, musicians and people that worked with the duke and band, this is as close to 'artist intent' as one can get in a case like this. So I feel that this is such one issue where it is ok to do so. --- mo
